Lake District Landscape

The Lake District has attracted painters and photographers in increasing number over the past two centuries. Most of the books listed below are from photographers, with a few on the underlying geology and landscape history, but I'll be correcting that shortly by adding more "artists of the brush". On my "Around England" site there is an article on the 2011 Lake Artists Summer Exhibition in Grasmere (by no means all landscape artists), and on this site a short piece on early books containing landscape illustrations by Alfred Heaton Cooper. Click on these links for blog posts categorised under Lake District Artists and Lake District Landscape here on this site.

Collingwood - The Lake Counties

The Lake Counties by W G CollingwoodWhen this book was written there was no such county as Cumbria. The Lake District spread across the boundaries of three counties: Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire. Cumbria was then seventy years into the future. W. G. Collingwood studied under John Ruskin at Oxford. For many of Ruskin's years at Brantwood, by Coniston Water, Collingwood served as his secretary, then later built his own career as writer, artist, historian and antiquarian. Apart from his writings one of his legacies was the Ruskin Museum in Coniston village, which he set up in 1901. Collingwood's study of The Lake Counties was first published in 1902. In 1988 William ('Bill') Rollinson, author of several outstanding publications on the region's history and traditions, updated it whilst retaining the essential character of the original. Colour photography supplements the black and white drawings of the earlier edition, and there is an excellent gazetteer at the end. Among all my collection of Lake District books I would certainly choose this if ever I were to be told that I could keep only a handful. This book is 240+ pages of absolute gold. Currently there are copies of The Lake Counties available on Amazon, both new and used.

Lake District Walks - Some Inexpensive Guides

Here is the opening paragraph from a recent post on my "Lake District in Books" site. The site describes (and allows visitors to purchase through Amazon.co.uk) a wide range of Lake District books, maps, DVDs and guides. There are special pages on thethe "Wainwright Guides" and other Wainwright books..

There are many guides to walking in the Lake District, and they come at a fairly wide range of price-levels in both paperback and hardback editions. Walking in the Lake District - Walks - Cheap GuidesElsewhere on this site we have some of the more popular "full-size" guides to Lake District walks, such as the Wainwright Guides and the Fellranger series, but on this blog post I'm focusing on some inexpensive, but extremely useful publications of the kind that can easily be slipped into a pocket. The examples I show here are for Ullswater walks (and the area close by) but there are equivalents for other parts of the Lake District. The "East Rambles" series of Lake District Walks, from Questa Amazon ImageThis series is typically around 50 pages with a concise but highly informative general introduction to the area incl

Lake District Walks - A Selection of Guidebooks

I recently showed on this blog several slimline economy-priced Lake District walking guides of the kind that are easily slipped into a pocket for an afternoon out. Today the selection is more substantial, more for slipping into a rucksack pocket than a jacket. Three guides (or series) are illustrated above, and don't forget Wainwright's 'Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells'.

Lakeland Fellranger Guides from Cicerone

Amazon ImageThe Lakeland Fellranger series from Cicerone provides excellent up to date descriptions of walks on the high fells of Lakeland. Each is copiously illustrated with route maps, colour photographs, sketches and panorama diagrams with text by Mark Richards. Introductory pages give information about the specific area and also important general points about fell-walking. The series is arranged into volumes corresponding to eight geographical divisions of the Lake District. Click on the appropriate link below for further details on each volume. All are a

"The Lake District for Holidays" - Railway Poster

Posters of many kinds are often used to give some colour to otherwise lifeless empty wall spaces both at home and at the office. Here is just one extract from this site showing wall decor posters of different kinds: England on Great Posters. Both heritage posters and newer ones can resurrect memories of great places we toured during childhood, illustrate for us places we plan to travel to at some time in the future - or with heritage posters, for example heritage railway posters, recall a little of what the world was like in decades, or even centuries past.

On my "old posters" site I am currently focusing on old railway posters promoting rail travel to many different parts of England. Steam trains are things of the past in England other than for special excursions and some tourist attractions, but they can be brought back to mind by railway posters from past times. When England's traditional coastal resorts were at the peak of their prosperity they frequently featured on travel posters. This was before the advent of economy flights to Spain, Portugal and elsewhere. A great deal of imagination and artistry went into selling both coastal and inland holiday places.

The following is an extract from a recent addition to the site:

The rise of widespread tourism and the development of the railway network both happened in the Victorian era. In some cases it was the increase in tourism demand that called for greater ease of travel but in the Lake District railways it was different. The majority of the railways there were built initially for Lakeland's histori

1920s Southern Railway Poster - Canterbury

Heritage poster reprints are much admired as decoration on otherwise drab wall spaces both in the home and at the office. Here is just one example from my site showing wall posters old and new: England old and new on Posters. Both heritage posters and newer ones can help retain pleasant memories of beautiful places we explored earlier in our life, prepare us for countries we would like to travel to at some time in the future - or in the case of many heritage posters recall a little of what things were like in decades, or centuries past.

On my "old posters" site I am currently focusing on old railway posters showing towns and cities all around England. Many of these date from the age of the steam engine. Posters also frequently illustrate an era in which Britain's coastal resorts were at their height. inexpensive flights to foreign subshine did not exist, and people spent their holidays nearer home. A great deal of creativity and art went into marketing and advertising both coastal and inland holiday resorts.

Here you will find a recent example from the site:

Canterbury first got a mainline railway station in 1846 when the South Eastern Railway launched its services to Ashford. The Southern Railway, to which the railway poster here relates, was created at the time of the 1923 rationalisation of the railways in Britain, known as "The Grouping". Several small railway companies were merged, including the South Eastern & Chatham railway, which itself had been formed by the coming together in 1899 of the original South Eastern Railway company with the London, Chatham and Dover Railway. The Southern Railway was nationalised in 1948, becoming the Southern Region of British Railways. Today, following privatisation, there is once again a "So
