Lake District Landscape
The Lake District has attracted painters and photographers in increasing number over the past two centuries. Most of the books listed below are from photographers, with a few on the underlying geology and landscape history, but I'll be correcting that shortly by adding more "artists of the brush". On my "Around England" site there is an article on the 2011 Lake Artists Summer Exhibition in Grasmere (by no means all landscape artists), and on this site a short piece on early books containing landscape illustrations by Alfred Heaton Cooper. Click on these links for blog posts categorised under Lake District Artists and Lake District Landscape here on this site.

Lake District Walks - Some Inexpensive Guides
Here is the opening paragraph from a recent post on my "Lake District in Books" site. The site describes (and allows visitors to purchase through Amazon.co.uk) a wide range of Lake District books, maps, DVDs and guides. There are special pages on thethe "Wainwright Guides" and other Wainwright books..

There are many guides to walking in the Lake District, and they come at a fairly wide range of price-levels in both paperback and hardback editions.Elsewhere on this site we have some of the more popular "full-size" guides to Lake District walks, such as the Wainwright Guides and the Fellranger series, but on this blog post I'm focusing on some inexpensive, but extremely useful publications of the kind that can easily be slipped into a pocket. The examples I show here are for Ullswater walks (and the area close by) but there are equivalents for other parts of the Lake District. The "East Rambles" series of Lake District Walks, from Questa
This series is typically around 50 pages with a concise but highly informative general introduction to the area incl

Lake District Walking Guides
I recently showed on this blog several slimline economy-priced Lake District walking guides of the kind that are easily slipped into a pocket for an afternoon out. Today the selection is more substantial, more for slipping into a rucksack pocket than a jacket. Three guides (or series) are illustrated above, and don't forget Wainwright's 'Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells'.
The Lakeland Fellranger series from Cicerone provides excellent up to date descriptions of walks on the high fells of Lakeland. Each is copiously illustrated with route maps, colour photographs, sketches and panorama diagrams with text by Mark Richards. Introductory pages give information about the specific area and also important general points about fell-walking. The series is arranged into volumes corresponding to eight geographical divisions of the Lake District. Click on the appropriate link below for further details on each volume. All are a
