Lake District Maps - "Horses for Courses"

All too often people venture out onto the Lake District mountains without the right equipment. Even when they have strong boots and have packed waterproofs it seems too many go out without an adequate map. The Lake District weather can change quickly and it is common for people to get lost. An appropriate map and the knowledge of how to use it are not merely desirable but essential tools for the walker on the hills.

Here you will find an extract from a recent article on my "Lake District in Books" blog. The site lists (and allows visitors to purchase through Amazon.co.uk) a range of Lake District books, maps, DVDs and guides, not least the famous "Wainwright Guides" as well as other Wainwright books..

In recent weeks mountain rescue organisations have been appealing to walkers to go out better prepared into the hills. In particular they have called for people to stop over-relying on technological gadgets (phones or otherwise) with digital maps and GPS. There is nothing wrong with this type of technology. We provide an image link to a popular model here and it can be helpful for many purposes, but GPS does not yet replace traditional map and compass when walking in what can be very dangerous hill country. 1920s LNER Tynemouth Railway Poster

Heritage posters are popular additions to plain walls both at home and at the office. On this page is one example from my site: England in Posters. Old posters such as these can help retain pleasant memories of wonderful places we toured during childhood, prepare us for countries we're planing to travel to in coming years or with heritage posters recall a little of what things were like in past generations.


The North East of England is often thought of as industrial sprawl but it is far more that that.
