When this book was written there was no such county as Cumbria. The Lake District spread across the boundaries of three counties: Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire. Cumbria was then seventy years into the future. W. G. Collingwood studied under John Ruskin at Oxford. For many of Ruskin's years at Brantwood, by Coniston Water, Collingwood served as his secretary, then later built his own career as writer, artist, historian and antiquarian. Apart from his writings one of his legacies was the Ruskin Museum in Coniston village, which he set up in 1901. Collingwood's study of The Lake Counties was first published in 1902. In 1988 William ('Bill') Rollinson, author of several outstanding publications on the region's history and traditions, updated it whilst retaining the essential character of the original. Colour photography supplements the black and white drawings of the earlier edition, and there is an excellent gazetteer at the end. Among all my collection of Lake District books I would certainly choose this if ever I were to be told that I could keep only a handful. This book is 240+ pages of absolute gold. Among guides to the Lake District fells Alfred Wainwright, even twenty years after his death, still stands head and shoulders above the rest. In recent weeks mountain rescue organisations have been appealing to walkers to go out better prepared into the hills. In particular they have called for people to stop over-relying on technological gadgets (phones or otherwise) with digital maps and GPS. There is nothing wrong with this type of technology.
